Chargers Fire Head Coach Brandon Staley

The Los Angeles Chargers fired Brandon Staley as head coach of the team one day after a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Fans were not surprised by the move as Staley has consistently been on the “hot seat” – a coach who would eventually be let go if things didn’t improve. After a 5-9 record this season and the visible lack of fight in his team, team owner Dean Spanos decided it was time to go in a different direction. Giff Smith will fill in as interim head coach for the remainder of the year.

Not only did Brandon Staley receive his walking papers today, but Tom Telesco (General Manager) was also relieved of his duties. He is being replaced on an interim basis by JoJo Wooden.
Staley was a surprising hire as head coach in 2021, as he had only one year’s experience as a defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams. Since then, he has gone 25-27 with the Chargers.

Fans have been hopeful for the organization’s prospects as they have a franchise quarterback and other good players. Last year, the team made the playoffs with a 10-7 record, which earned them a Wild Card entry. That playoff game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars saw the Chargers rise 27-0 in the second quarter. But, after that, the Jaguars scored 31 points to win by a final of 31-30.

Brandon Staley Season Losses Lead to Firing

In the ensuing off-season, questions swirled as to whether Brandon Staley would be the coach to take the next step and go further into postseason play. The results of this season have definitively confirmed that would not be the case, and Thursday night was the final straw. Without Justin Herbert, who was out due to injury, the Chargers were lifeless, leading to a 42-0 halftime deficit.

It has become clear that Brandon Staley is not the leader in the locker room that the Chargers need, and it is past time to make a change. According to social media reports, Spanos was extremely upset during the game and had all but made up his mind to fire Staley before the game was over.

The team will continue their season next Saturday at home versus the Buffalo Bills.
