With Kamala Harris on the cusp of officially becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, speculation is rife about her choice for vice president. The selection process is under a compressed timeline, adding urgency to the decision-making.
Among the top contenders:

– Josh Shapiro, Governor of Pennsylvania: Shapiro is praised for his electoral success in a key swing state, which he won by nearly 15 points in 2022. His ability to appeal to rural voters makes him a strong candidate.

– Mark Kelly, Senator from Arizona: Kelly has received strong endorsements from his colleagues as a future vice president. However, concerns about the balance of the Senate make his selection more complicated.

– Roy Cooper, Governor of North Carolina: Cooper’s success in a swing state where he has won twice alongside Trump is noteworthy. His ability to attract moderate and ticket-splitting voters makes him a viable option.

– Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan: Whitmer has solid backing from her Democratic allies, adding to her appeal as a potential running mate.

– Andy Beshear, Governor of Kentucky: Known for his progressive agenda, Beshear’s home-state delegation is pushing for his selection. He also appears to be camera ready for the role of vice president, which the base finds very appealing.

– Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota: Walz has caught the attention of progressives for his legislative achievements, including paid family leave and universal free school meals.

– JB Pritzker, Governor of Illinois: Pritzker’s ability to self-fund a campaign and his political experience make him a strong contender.
As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the pressure is on for Harris to make a decision that will bolster her campaign and unite the party.
