The John Fetterman Turnaround

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has been the source of headaches for many on both sides of the political aisle, especially since suffering a stroke during his 2022 Senate campaign.

Fetterman was already perceived by Republicans as too left-wing and outside the norm for a typical senator from the relatively working-class state of Pennsylvania. He then became the focal point of an embarrassing interlude for Senate Democrats when they amended the chamber’s rules to permit informal attire. Voices on both Left and Right ridiculed this change as evidence of a decline in seriousness in the American Congress.

Now, John Fetterman unexpectedly appears to have embraced more of a “maverick” role inside the Senate. His new persona came alive in the wake of the October 7th massacre in southern Israel.

Near unanimous condemnation of Hamas among US Congressional members followed the brutal assault on Israeli civilians. But, as time has moved on, some Democrat lawmakers out of progressive districts have been pressured by their constituents to condemn Israel and its defensive war in Gaza. Rather than taking this softer approach to the conflict, Fetterman doubled down on his support for Israel’s right to defend itself and responsibility to bring its more than 200 hostages home safely. He even posted pictures of the Israeli hostages in his office and waved an Israeli flag outside the Capitol amidst a group of pro-Palestine protesters.

The Pennsylvania Senator went on to call out the harassment of a Jewish/Israeli falafel restaurant in Philadelphia by a pro-Palestinian crowd. The crowd was chanting, “Goldie, Goldie you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide” because the owner has donated to Israeli families whose children had been taken captive by Hamas. Posting on X, Fetterman said, “They could be protesting Hamas. They could be protesting Hamas’ systematic rape of Israeli women and girls or demanding the remaining hostages be immediately released. Instead, they targeted a Jewish restaurant. It’s pathetic and rank antisemitism.”

Now, in perhaps his most surprising move bucking the party line, Fetterman has raised concerns about the unprecedented flow of illegal immigrants across the US southern border. Not only did he state that “it isn’t xenophobic to care about the border,” he also told the media that he “isn’t a progressive,” a definite blow to his younger, hard left base of supporters.

Although Fetterman supported certain progressive policies during his Senate run, such as legalizing marijuana, raising the minimum wage, and backing organized labor, he strayed from the Left on other issues. For instance, he became pro-fracking during the 2022 campaign despite his vocal opposition to the fracking industry in 2018. He told the media, “I’ve always supported, as long as it’s done environmentally sound and making sure that we’re not contaminating our waterways.”

While Pennsylvania has not historically been home to many progressive politicians, cities such as Philadelphia and even Pittsburgh are trending in that direction. Considerable movement away from steel production and blue-collar industry to healthcare and technology has been driving more political participation from young voters who tend to lean left.

As with many other states, Pennsylvania’s cities and rural areas are competing for the state’s political representation at the federal level. John Fetterman seems to have found his place in the Democratic caucus as more of a blue-dog Democrat, identifying and supporting the issues that unite both his progressive, urban constituents, as well as his working-class, rural ones.
