Rep. George Santos Expelled from Congress

George Santos

Representative George Santos expelled after a bizarre tenure as the Republican Representative from NY. His bizarre tenure came to a close early Friday morning, when he was ousted from the U.S. Congress. This makes Santos only the sixth Congressman in the entire history of the United States to be expelled from the House of Representatives. The necessary two-thirds majority vote was met when 105 of Santos’s Republican colleagues joined the Democrats in the effort to boot him, with the final vote as 311-114.

The expulsion vote came shortly after the House Ethics Committee released its scathing report on the Congressman.

The Committee held nothing back, stating,

Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit. He blatantly stole from his campaign…He reported fictitious loans to his political committees to induce donors and party committees to make further contributions to his campaign…He used his connections to high value donors and other political campaigns to obtain additional funds for himself through fraudulent or otherwise questionable business dealings. And he sustained all of this through a constant series of lies to his constituents, donors, and staff about his background and experience.

In a lengthy post on X, George Santos responded to the ethics investigation, “It is a disgusting politicized smear that shows the depths of how low our federal government has sunk. Everyone who participated in this grave miscarriage of Justice should all be ashamed of themselves.”

Accusations and Admissions

George Santos was elected to Congress in 2022 to represent New York’s 3rd congressional district. Since then, he has faced a barrage of accusations from Democrats and Republicans alike.

For starters, Santos seems to have lied about working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, as the organizations told the New York Times, “they had no record of his ever working there.”

There is also some mystery regarding how Santos acquired his wealth in the first place. He invested around $700,000 of his own money in his congressional campaign, but the firm which, according to his financial disclosure forms, supposedly created his wealth does not appear to have any clients.

Santos also lied about attending Baruch College, a lie which he owned up to when speaking with Piers Morgan, saying, “I just think it was a stupid decision on my part. A very stupid decision that I regret every day.”

Finally, the former Congressman previously stood by his assertions that his mother was present in one of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11 and that his grandparents were Holocaust survivors – neither of which is apparently true.

What Comes Next for George Santos?

Per the New York Times, Santos stated, “To hell with this place,” when asked whether he intended to use his privileges as a former congressman to visit the House floor in the future.

The ex-representative still faces 13 federal counts, including stealing public funds, wire fraud, and providing false statements to the House of Representatives. In addition, federal authorities are continuing investigations of Santos for campaign finance violations and a credit card fraud scheme.

One would be hard-pressed to say that the future looks bright for George Santos, as he faces the prospect of years of litigation and potential jail time.

The New York third congressional district will now have to hold a special election to determine who will replace Santos. Some potential candidates include Former Congressman Tom Suozzi (D), State Sen. Jack Martins (R), and Former. State Sen. Anna Kaplan (D).
