Am I Racist?: Movie Review

Written by Alex Kuhn @magaman28

Coming off the success of “What is a Woman?”, it was no surprise to learn that Matt Walsh was working on another documentary, “Am I Racist?”. The entire team, including director Justin Folk, returned for this project. But what was truly surprising? A Daily Wire movie hitting theaters! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine DW launching a movie in theaters. It seemed impossible. Then again, with the Lord, all things are possible. Sure enough, on opening weekend, 1,500 theaters across the nation were screening the film.

It felt a little strange asking the ticket seller for a ticket to “Am I Racist?”, but fortunately, I received the usual customer service and was able to see the movie. Others in different theaters weren’t so lucky. The film was filled with humor reminiscent of *Borat*. The first several minutes show Matt trying to infiltrate DEI workshops without a disguise. Unsurprisingly, he’s quickly caught, and the police are called. Matt then decides to adopt a new disguise, much like the college professor persona from *What is a Woman?*. This time, he sports a man-bun, gray sweater, and carries Ibram X. Kendi’s *How to Be an Antiracist*. Armed with his new look, Matt signs up for and attends various DEI workshops, including one led by Robin DiAngelo and another with the head of the Phoenix, Arizona chapter of BLM. Along the way, he even enrolls in an online DEI certification program, which he proudly presents whenever he goes out in public to prove his expertise on guiding the world toward being anti-racist. Matt engages with people of different races, both black and white, to hear their thoughts on racism.

The funniest scene had me laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my chair. Matt re-enacts the infamous Jussie Smollett subway attack. Late at night, he wonders aloud, “I’m hungry, but what’s open this late?”. The movie then cuts to an old clip of Smollett describing the attack that supposedly happened while he was getting Subway at 2 a.m. After Matt buys his sandwich, two men in red hats approach, shouting “Daily Wire!”. Obviously, these are actors, just like the ones Smollett paid to stage his attack. One of the actors punches Matt, and Matt punches back, still holding his Subway sandwich. Eventually, Matt ends up in the snow, and I couldn’t stop laughing through the whole scene. Another hilarious moment involves Robin DiAngelo. Matt somehow convinces her to pay reparations to his producer, Ben. She hands him $30, and the total cost of the workshop is reduced by $30—absolutely hysterical.

Should you watch this movie at least once? Absolutely. Should you watch it twice? I most definitely will. There were names and moments in the film that I want to revisit. The humor is unparalleled. Could they have done a better job with the movie? Certainly. For instance, there was no rebuttal from anti-DEI experts to counter the DEI narrative. In *What is a Woman?*, Matt interviewed Miriam Grossman to explain why the transgender ideology is so flawed. I would have liked to see a similar expert weigh in against DEI ideology.
